CO2 Pollution by travel method

To reduce the huge environmental damage we are doing to the planet - we need to make different choices.


The good news is that the small things we do - can make a big difference.


For instance a domestic flight over the 534km from London to Scotland, will create 135kg of C02 pollution per passenger. But if you choose to take the train, it will create just 21kg of CO2 pollution per passenger. That's 6 times less pollution than the plane journey.


That's why travellers and non-travellers alike, benefit when someone takes the train rather than the plane - as it cuts pollution for everyone.



Data Notes:

The C02 output for aviation is based on Radiative forcing (RF) which is a measure of the additional environmental impact of aviation. These include emissions of nitrous oxides and water vapour when emitted at high altitude.


The data on all transport emissions has been taken from the calculations of the Department of Business Energy and Industrial, contained in 'Greenhouse gas reporting: conversion factors 2019'
