More than 1.2 million of us have a side hustle according to official figures and the actual number is probably a lot higher. That's 72% higher than it was in the 1980s.
Quick Facts
During the coronavirus pandemic, this has become more apparent than ever before. According to a recent survey by Caunce O’Hara, there is a boom in the gig economy. In the last year alone, almost a quarter of all respondents (23%) have started a side hustle. And two in five (40%) claim their side hustle has been running for anywhere between one and five years.
One in three MPs registered some form of outside income between January 2020 and August 2021
Some of the most closely watched data in the US on the gig economy come from an annual research report produced by DollarSprout, a platform dedicated to side hustling and entrepreneurship. The 2021 Side Hustle Report showed a distinct departure from 2020 in the gig economy. Last year, for example, just over one in four people were using gig income to cover their monthly bills; but, in 2021, that number has soared to 41%. Also this year, the percentage of people spending over 15 hours per week on their side gigs has more than doubled, from 12% to 27%.
