The Rise Of The Side Hustle

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

More than 1.2 million of us have a side hustle according to official figures and the actual number is probably a lot higher. That's 72% higher than it was in the 1980s.

Quick Facts

  • During the coronavirus pandemic, this has become more apparent than ever before. According to a recent survey by Caunce O’Hara, there is a boom in the gig economy. In the last year alone, almost a quarter of all respondents (23%) have started a side hustle. And two in five (40%) claim their side hustle has been running for anywhere between one and five years.

  • One in three MPs registered some form of outside income between January 2020 and August 2021

  • Some of the most closely watched data in the US on the gig economy come from an annual research report produced by DollarSprout, a platform dedicated to side hustling and entrepreneurship. The 2021 Side Hustle Report showed a distinct departure from 2020 in the gig economy. Last year, for example, just over one in four people were using gig income to cover their monthly bills; but, in 2021, that number has soared to 41%. Also this year, the percentage of people spending over 15 hours per week on their side gigs has more than doubled, from 12% to 27%.
