I don't meet anyone these days who denies that climate change is happening but I do think that few people genuinely realise or believe the extent of the problem.
Scientists, environmentalists and journalists talk of a climate and nature crisis - but since Covid happened, we know what a crisis looks like - there is real and dramatic change in what we do. We talk about the need to do something but few actually change the things they do or have a real sense of the change that is happening on our doorstep, not thousands of miles away. So these numbers from the government's chief scientific advisor are really shocking.
In terms of what we can do or should do to change things - that's a much more difficult question. Few of us can build a grassland meadow. But we can put pressure on politicians and the brands we buy from - to say we won't buy from companies who don't support biodiversity.
Politicians will react to the public mood and if the public demand change, change will happen.
