Who On Earth do We Trade With?
There's a lot of talk about the effects of Brexit and whether we can replace our traditional trading partners with new ones or improve the amount of exports we make to non-EU countries.
So here is a simple picture of what our trading looks like, who we sell to and perhaps an insight into the task ahead if we have to replace our current customers with new ones.
Almost half (48%) of UK goods exports went to the EU in 2016. UK goods exports to the EU were worth £145 billion in 2016, or 7.4% of GDP.
A full list of the amount we export to each country of the world can be found here
As for what we sell, well - motor vehicles and parts is the largest product group by value of exports: the UK exported £18 billion of motor vehicles (and trailers) to the EU in 2016. The next largest product group exported to the EU is chemicals and chemical products, £15 billion in 2016.
